In India, the PC penetration has remained staggering at 3 percent unlike the other countries like Malaysia that has about 12 percent. In order to give the industry a boost, Acer India is reaching out to the first-time computer buyers in emerging markets with its nettop category in India.
The new Aspire EL1600 brings the small portable nettop powered by Atom processor N230, just 1/3rd of the normal desktop. What's more, it is designed for smart space and power saving, and is Internet-centric machine that offers reasonable and smart web experience, along with an easy platform for basic applications, the company said. S. Rajendran, Chief Marketing Officer, Acer India, said, "The EL1600 marks the launch of the first nettop product in the Indian market. Our objective is to bring nettops as another choice for potential computer users."
He said the EL1600 is no compromise PC that delivers great performance and gives good Net experience, it is equally versatile for normal computing applications that ranges from document processing (text, spreadsheets, presentations) and management to audio/video playbacks.
The Atom processor, formerly called Diamondville, is a small, low-power chip designed for inexpensive notebooks or desktops. "These machines are intended for first-time computer buyers in emerging markets, as well as users in mature markets who are willing to trade performance for a low-cost notebook that complements their existing computers. It is based on entirely new micro architecture designed specially for small devices and low power," said Prashanth Adiraju, Director (Business Development), Intel Technologies.
Priced at sub 20K and powered by Intel Atom 230 CPU, 1.6 Ghz, the nettop offers best in class computing performance, energy saving capabilities, and cooling performance, the company claimed. The SATA series hard disk of up to 160GB gives the user ample storage option besides 1024 MB RAM memory installed which adds to the system performance. It is rounded up by Intel Graphics media Accelerator 950 for graphics capabilities, high-definition audio and up to 8 USB ports gives the user both entertainment options and connectivity needs.
WS Mukund, Managing Director, Acer India, said, "India has to go a long way on the PC penetration front, which figures among the lowest in the world. The sales of desktop PCs have seemingly hit roadblocks evidently slowing down to an extent, nettops herald the arrival of a much-needed computing solution that appeals to the larger audience with an astute combination of pricing and specs."
